Record flooding and dam crisis at Chimney Rock and Lake Lure: Situation updates and rescue operations

Chimney Rock and its surrounding areas, such as Lake Lure, recently experienced severe flooding from the effects of Tropical Storm Helen. The Lake Lure dam was in danger of collapsing, but the dam is currently reported to be stable. Floods have caused extensive damage across the area. Residents below the dam were ordered to quickly evacuate to higher ground, as water was rushing over the dam. A curfew remains in effect in Rutherford County and most roads in western North Carolina are closed, even as the situation improves.

Local authorities have advised everyone not to travel unless necessary and stay in safe places. For those forced to leave their homes, shelter has been arranged at RS Central High School.

Chimney Rock and surrounding areas, especially Lake Lure, have recently suffered severe flooding. This situation is caused by heavy rainfall from Hurricane Helen. Floods have raised rivers dangerously high, leading to critical dam conditions in several areas. Residents around the dam were ordered to immediately evacuate to higher ground when the Lake Lure dam began to overflow. Although the situation later came under some control and the dam was out of danger of collapse, the area still faces damage.

Flooding has caused extensive damage, road closures and landslides in western North Carolina. Nearby rivers have risen dangerously high, especially the Swannanoa and Broad rivers. Many residents were evacuated from their homes and ordered to evacuate the area below the dam. The local administration has opened shelters in various areas and asked people to move with caution.

In view of this severe flood, the local administration and rescue teams have declared an emergency and are monitoring the flood situation to ensure that people stay safe and avoid more major accidents.
